Postpartum Depression Tied to Nutrient Deficiency

On episode 67 of the Learning to Mom Podcast, I had a conversation with Miranda Bower, the founder & owner of Postpartum University. During our chat, we talked about the root causes of Postpartum Depression (PPD) and other mental health disorders during Postpartum.

One of the key causes of these disorders is a lack of nutrients.

Postpartum Issues

A lack of nutrients & support are two root causes of Postpartum Depression.

These issues can lead to bigger problems, such as:

  • Mood swings

  • Anxiety

  • Difficulty sleeping

Anxiety manifests itself in many Postpartum Mood Disorders, which I will mention later.

Digestive Issues in Postpartum

The hormonal changes taking place in your body can have a big affect on your ability to digest foods properly. 

 

Your body doesn’t produce as many digestive enzymes as usual, which makes it difficult to digest heavy foods, like smoothies & casseroles.

 

You may also be unable to eat large meals due to the decrease in enzymes.

Inflammation in Your Postpartum Body

Here’s a question: What contributes to Postpartum Mood Disorders?

 

Nutrient deprivation is one of the leading causes of inflammation during postpartum.

 

Gluten triggers a highly inflammatory response in the body. This a problem because your body’s going through so many hormonal fluctuations.

 

Chronic inflammation can lead to several Postpartum Mood Disorders, including:

  • Baby Blues

  • Postpartum Rage (Gluten = higher inflammation in the body)

  • Build-up of toxins in the body

  • Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

  • Psychosis

Immune System in Postpartum

When your body is deprived of nutrients during Postpartum, it can be hard to keep your energy up. Sometimes you just feel like you can’t get through the day.

 

This exhaustion can contribute to things like:

  • Increased anxiety

  • Hormonal mood swings

  • More inflammation

 

How do you tackle these problems?

Treatment For Postpartum Mood Disorders

The best way to avoid developing Postpartum Mood Disorders is to support your body during Postpartum.

 

There are several ways you can do this:

 

  • Getting enough sleep

  • Eating the right foods to maintain nutrients

  • Eating foods free of chemicals & antibiotics

 

Nutrients are essential to keep your body functioning properly during Postpartum.

No matter how you look at it, Postpartum can make the daily struggle even more difficult.

 

You may feel high anxiety, a surge in hormones, or decreased energy. You just can’t calm down.
