Should I choose Baby Formula or Breast Milk?
In the world we live in, I really like to remind moms that… you don’t need a reason to formula-feed.
I don’t want you to feel guilty for choosing formula when that’s the right choice for you and your baby.
There are several benefits to feeding your baby formula:
More time to bond: Without the stress of breastfeeding, you’ll have more time to connect and be attentive to your baby.
Formula-feeding accommodates many situations: Whether you’re a working mom or have reasons not to breastfeed (history w/ sexual assault, cancer treatment, etc.), formula feeding is a convenient alternative.
Another crucial point is that you don’t need to breastfeed to bond with your baby.
Which Baby Formulas are close to Breast Milk?
Finding a baby formula that’s similar to breast milk depends on the ingredients.
Generally, you want to use a formula that includes:
Whey Protein: Breast milk contains 60% whey protein
Lactose: Lactose is the main carbohydrate in breastmilk
What is the Right Baby Formula to Water Ratio?
Having the correct ratio of baby formula to water is based on the type of formula you’re using.
There are 3 main types of baby formula:
Powder: This is the cheapest & most common formula, mixed with water.
Liquid concentrate: Canned milk, half and half mixture w/ water
Ready-to-feed: This kind you literally just pour in the bottle & serve.
Which Baby Formula is Best for Newborns?
There isn’t a specific brand of formula that is best for newborns.
The ready-to-feed formula is most recommended by pediatricians during the first few months after delivery because it can be used immediately.
Keep in mind: the amount of formula your baby needs varies based on their weight and age.
Why is my Baby Refusing a Bottle?
If you’re struggling to transition your baby to bottle-feeding, they may be trying to adjust to the new form of feeding.
Some techniques you can try:
Make sure your baby is familiar with the bottle
Try mixing breastmilk with formula: Blending the two together will comfort your baby and get it acclimated to the new form of milk.
What is the Best Baby Formula?
The truth is that there isn’t one baby formula that’s best for everyone.
The best strategy is to experiment with several types and brands of formula. Find the formula that works for you, your lifestyle and your budget.
How Do I Know if Formula is Right for my Baby?
In today’s world, there’s a lot of stress around choosing to formula-feed:
Pressure around best practices and proper nutrition
Belief that formula-feeding is the “easy way.”
Claims that formula-feeding decreases bonding between mom and baby
These claims can create a lot of shame and doubt for new moms.
Still, you don’t have to listen to any of these points. Trust your gut on how to feed your baby.
Since this is your first foray into formula-feeding, be patient while you figure out the process. Don’t be afraid to take time finding the right fit.
It will be worth the effort!
